La primera parte analiza cómo se originaron las democracias europeas (desde la antigua Grecia hasta el realce de las democracias sociales) y explica cómo sus instituciones actuales tomaron forma. El contexto histórico incluye el realce de las instituciones europeas en el periodo posterior a la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Durante la segunda parte del curso los estudiantes aprenden acerca de las organizaciones y los mecanismos actuales de la Unión Europea. El funcionamiento de las instituciones es explicado con énfasis en cómo la historia ha impactado la organización actual de la Unión Europea.
Finalmente, la clase trata temas contemporáneos como: la economía europea, la unión política y social, las políticas migratorias (el espacio Schengen), negociaciones climáticas, aspectos culturales, etc.
Objetivos de la clase: Ofrecer conocimiento en relación a la Unión Europea a los estudiantes, desarrollar su capacidad analítica y proveerlos con un inglés enfocado a las Relaciones Internacionales.
The first part analyses how modern European Democracies originated (since ancient Greece until the rise of social democracies) and explains how the current institutions took form. The historical background includes the rise of the European institutions in post-Second-World-War Europe.
In the second part of the course, students learn about the current organization and mechanisms of the European Union. The functioning of the institutions is explained with a specific emphasis on how history has impacted the current organization.
Finally, the class covers contemporary topics such as: the European economy, the social and political union, migration policies (the Schengen area), climate negotiations, and cultural aspects.
Main goals of the class: to offer a first EU-related knowledge to the students, to develop their analysis skills, to provide them with International Relations related English
